Florida Area Team - ABOUT US!
AFS Mission: AFS-USA works toward a more just and peaceful
world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families,
schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.
How do various levels of AFS - local, area, regional and national
- interact and communicate? The AFS organization in the United States is known as AFS Intercultural
Programs or the American Field Service, but the legal name of the corporation is AFS-USA, Inc., incorporated
in the state of Illinois. AFS-USA, Inc. is governed by a board of directors and administered by staff at the
national and regional levels. The programs of AFS are administered at the area level by a group of volunteers
called the Area Leadership Team and at the local level by volunteers who are organized into chapters, committees,
school clubs or other affiliate groups –the generic term “local team” is broadly used. However, a local team
that becomes a chapter has special responsibilities.
Regional and National Volunteer Councils review AFS activities and practices and work with staff to
enhance the growth and quality of AFS in their respective regions and throughout the organization.
Regular communication between and among the various levels of staff and volunteers is vital to insure AFS
programs maintain our own high standards for providing a quality experience for everyone who becomes involved
with AFS: students, returnees, natural families, host families, schools and volunteers. Successful local teams
and chapters are up-to-date on AFS contacts, current procedures and deadlines, and know the importance of
positive relationships. They also communicate their issues, needs and ideas to the organization in helpful
and productive ways.
