News Update from the Alliance: Senate Cosponsor Added to Host Family Tax Deduction Legislation

September 18, 2006 - Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) Friday added her name as a cosponsor
of S. 2272, legislation to increase the tax deduction for host families of foreign
exchange students. The bill, introduced in February by Senators Norm Coleman (R-MN)
and Tim Johnson (D-SD), would increase the monthly tax deduction from $50 to $200.
The new deduction would be indexed to the annual cost-of-living adjustment. The
legislation has been referred to the Senate Finance Committee for consideration.
Companion legislation, H.R. 1504, introduced by Reps. Rob Bishop (R-UT) and Robert
Andrews (D-NJ), is pending in the House of Representatives. That bill currently
has 17 additional cosponsors.
